Metro app
I would highly recommend downloading a Beijing metro map – it makes it so much easier to follow the map. I am using China Subway by Pekall, which also allows you to calculate the distances between the metro stops. The metro card comes only in Chinese but you are able to change it into English from the settings. Also remember to download the offline exit maps to the metro card.
How to access Facebook and Youtube in China
Chinese government has blocked many of the sites (Facebook, twitter, Youtube) and is censoring the information on the online search engines. If you want to access your Facebook while in China you should get a VPN before entering the country. NB! Gmail is NOT blocked!
Securites (proxy) - it works well on phones and computer but to use it for long-term it is going to be expensive.
VPN One Click - out for MAC/iOS and android. I am using it and I like it. (Need to pay)
Tiger VPN - Used it on my phone for quite some time for free.
Freegate - have not been using it myself but I know many who have. Could not get it work with my MAC.

Pleco
A lifesaver can be a smartphone app called Pleco, which comes with Chinese-English and Chinese-German dictionary. There is also a free version of Pleco and that should be enough for a short trip. Check out Pleco HERE.
Beijing City Guide
The app has all the main attractions and places with the maps
